A header mockup

I've been looking at various websites' designs and working to come up with a design that I can call my own. It's slow going, but I've got something that I like just a little bit. Here's a preview of the header:

It kind of reminds me of Half Life, which is cool, but I'm not sure I have the ability to resolve such a very dark design to a light body design (that is, black-on-white). I do know that I want my design to be a single-column design (or at least ere towards one column, like shawnblanc.net and Daring Fireball). I'll continue to post iterations and other mockups as I'm able.

Suggestions?

I think tour header mock-up looks good at a scaled down size, but at full resolution I think it may be a bit distracting. I think it's a great concept, and just needs a little tweaking with the blurred background text.

I like the simplicity of single-column sites. Blogs are so common now that most readers don't need help with navigation, and a single column blog gives the most focus to content.

Wow, thanks for commenting! I appreciate the insight, and I think that you're right; it probably would distract the eye at full size. I'm also very uncomfortable with using a dark background, because I was under the impression that black-on-white (or very close thereto) is optimal on the eyes.

I have next to no artistic skills, so I look to other sites for inspiration; the idea for my name being front-and-center and reappearing in the background came while analyzing the header at Aaron Bockover's site. I'll keep working on the design, though.

I just realized you've been posting on blogger for a while now. No wonder I haven't seen anything from you in forever. I've been subscribed to your other feed.
